Norma’s Story
Norma, a mother of three children was regularly fighting with her 6-year-old son, Nate, and was struggling to communicate with her 14-year-old son, Chris. However, things started to look up when Norma began doing the Positive Parenting Program (Triple P). It’s the simple strategies that have helped transform her family, she says; using time-out effectively, knowing when she needs to take time for herself, and being able to diffuse a tense situation. Not only have her relationships with Nate and Chris improved, but Norma also says the boys get on better too. “Last night, I saw them playing together, and sometimes Chris comes out of his room and watches TV with my Nate. We go to the park and stuff like that – we didn’t use to do that,” she says. Norma, whose first language is Spanish, says it was helpful to do the Group Triple P sessions in her preferred language and with other parents going through similar things. “It was more comfortable because I could learn on my own, and it’s my first language, so it’s easier for me to understand,” she says. “I love it.”
